This is a listing for a Chaki D-3 double bass. This instrument boasts a refined appearance, characteristic of Kyoto craftsmanship, and a distinct vintage Japanese charm. Its deep reddish-brown exterior is very atmospheric, giving it a striking presence on stage. Chaki is known as a brand with strong support among jazz and upright bass enthusiasts, and this particular instrument fully embodies that appeal. Its rich, warm low-end and natural resonance, which allows the wood's character to shine through, make it an excellent choice for those starting out with the double bass, as well as for those seeking the unique flavor of a vintage Japanese instrument. In terms of sound character, rather than a massive, expansive sound suited for orchestras, its appeal lies in its well-defined low notes, quick attack, and dense mid-low frequencies. The thump that propels jazz walking bass lines forward and its ability to cut through an ensemble are often cited as strengths of the Chaki sound. In terms of playability, unlike instruments with extreme quirks, Japanese-made basses tend to have a design that is easier to adapt to, making them well-suited for Japanese players and common performance environments. While there are scuffs, minor scratches, and signs of use consistent with its age, these do not detract from the instrument's overall character and can be enjoyed as part of its vintage charm. We highly recommend this instrument to anyone looking for a characterful Japanese double bass. Accessories include a bow and a case. Please examine the photos carefully and understand that this is a used item before purchasing. *Due to its large size, shipping is not possible. We request direct pickup between Ibaraki and Tokyo.
