Time Sale! Extremely Rare: Includes Ichiro Tsuchida's Handwritten Handle Installation Diagram This listing is for a genno (hammer) made by Koichiro Hasegawa, along with a diagram handwritten by Ichiro Tsuchida, the former owner of Tsuchida Cutlery Shop, explaining how to install the handle. (※ A portion of the handwritten diagram is shown in the images.) [Product Details] New, Unused (slight rust present) Weight: 460 grams (approx. 123 monme) Includes Ichiro Tsuchida's diagram for handle installation [Images] The photos show the genno with a rubber band placed under the Koichiro signature to indicate its position. ※ More photos available upon request. Please examine the item carefully as shown in the images. I purchased this approximately 30 years ago at Tsuchida Cutlery Shop in Sangenjaya, Tokyo. I bought it from Ichiro Tsuchida, the father of the current owner, Noboru. This was when the shop was still in a wooden building. The following is a description from the History of Tools section on the website of Suzuki Hardware Store Co., Ltd. in Setagaya, Tokyo: To create this genno, Koichiro Hasegawa, in his late twenties, visited Ichiro Tsuchida, known as one of the pioneers in the study of carpentry tools. Subsequently, under Tsuchida's guidance in genno making, he repeatedly overcame challenges through trial and error, eventually establishing his reputation as a genno blacksmith. As described by Suzuki Hardware Store above, I was very pleased to be able to purchase a work born from the friendship of Koichiro Hasegawa and Ichiro Tsuchida at Tsuchida Cutlery Shop. [Background] Over thirty years ago, With the wave of industrialization, hand tools were being replaced by artificial whetstones and power tools. At that time, we were constantly sharpening tools during our breaks. Thinking about what I would do if I could no longer work, I decided to become a hand tool dealer when I got older and started collecting whetstones in Kyoto. During this time, I also visited Tsuchida Cutlery Shop to purchase items, bringing a small gift. After returning, I would send them apples and other items, and they would kindly call me, which led to them teaching me various things. During one of these conversations, the topic of genno handles came up, and he explained it to me. I will also provide the diagram he drew at that time. (※ Some parts of the writing are difficult to read, but I will include a copy with added notes on a separate sheet.) Perhaps, In the past few years, genno with curved handles have been appearing on the market, but I believe that once people see this explanation, the trend will completely change.
