A bobbin lace linen doily in a floral shape, featuring motifs of the sun, stars, and flowers, with chic Art Nouveau-style curves. Purchased in Bruges, the Venice of Belgium, this antique piece exudes a gentle, soft cream ivory color, retaining its natural unbleached linen hue with subtle hints of pale pink and a delicate skin tone. The central star resembles a bellflower or periwinkle, while the surrounding curves evoke clusters of pears or figs, and could also be interpreted as tulips or lilies. Inside the floral/fruit motifs, a three-leaf clover is visible, and within that, six linear crosses ✙ appear, as if threads are spanning across. This design enhances a sense of purity, clarity, and coolness. The twisted, sheer-looking lace allows air to pass through, offering a refreshing feel in spring, summer, and early autumn. Its gentle colors also bring warmth during the winter months. The technique resembles Idria lace from Slovakia (formerly Yugoslavia), located between Italy and Austria. The design, created by twisting and joining threads to form ribbon-like shapes, likely draws inspiration from Italian Milanese lace and other similar styles. The elaborate design, including the floral elements, is estimated to be from the 19th century. Crafted from fine to medium-thick linen yarn, the doily has a smooth, soft, and natural texture.
