A beautiful antique piece from the Victorian era, circa 1860-1910. This is a square doily or handkerchief made in the Maltese lace style from Italy, or Bedfordshire Maltese lace from England. Originating from Malta, a Mediterranean island south of Italy, this lace features a golden hue, a lighter tone than the yellow commonly seen. Crafted from silk threads with a gentle, shimmering pale sepia-egg color, this piece was made using dozens of Maltese bobbins. The edges are further embellished with crochet lace. This all-silk handkerchief measures approximately 32cm square, with the central silk fabric measuring about 13.5cm square. It is soft, light, incredibly smooth, and lustrous. The square silk fabric has a subtle sheen. The edges are meticulously finished with several layers of edging, from which the Maltese lace, a type of bobbin lace, gracefully expands. Alternating silk-woven flower motifs and diamond patterns are arranged, with a cross visible within the diamonds. The crochet lace leading to the trim flares out softly, creating a light and airy feel. Although this piece does not feature the Maltese cross motif, its thread quality and overall atmosphere suggest it is Maltese lace. Maltese lace, a specialty craft from Malta when it was a British territory, was praised as a jewel of silk. It was largely purchased by British royalty and the wealthy. It was so expensive that even a commoner would have to spend their entire lifetime's wages to afford even a small piece of lace. In England, Bedfordshire Maltese lace was created to imitate Maltese lace, using silk different from that of Maltese origin. It is said that the Maltese cross motif, used by patriotic warriors, was omitted out of respect and modesty. There appear to be no tears, holes, or fraying. Two faint stains (discoloration) are visible on the central silk fabric. This is for those who do not mind. Perfect as an accompaniment for dress-up occasions. Of course, for brides (as something old), but it would also be lovely as a pocket square for a groom's tuxedo. An intricate and beautiful work of art. Also suitable for displaying under dolls such as mignonettes, bisque dolls, or teddy bears. You can enjoy displaying it to show off the lace, or place small objets d'art on it. We hope that whoever is looking for this or has taken a liking to it will cherish it. ✠ We are also offering other Maltese lace items. The German band shown above is also available for purchase.
